SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This role manages accounting processes, financial reporting, budgeting, audits, tax and internal controls while supporting the organization’s mission and long-term financial sustainability.

The Controller will:

  • Ensure the integrity of the organization’s financial operations.
  • Provide support for initiatives and assist the organization in developing and meeting strategic goals.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate strong professional accountability, collaborative communication and a commitment to process improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and cash management.
  • Maintaining accounting and administrative systems to support timely, accurate and efficient financial operations, including monthly reconciliation, allocation and closing procedures.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance and FASB nonprofit standards
  • Monitor cash activity and transfers. Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Develop and maintain financial dashboards and reports for leadership and the Board of Directors

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis and recommendations
  • Support long-term financial planning and cash flow forecasting

Compliance and Audit

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS requirements
  • Manage annual audits and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
  • Oversee grant financial reporting and ensure compliance with grantor requirements
  • Maintain strong internal controls and risk management practices

Grants and Fund Accounting

  • State and third-party contract billing.
  • Monitor grant budgets, expenditures, and reporting deadlines
  • Ensure proper allocation of costs across programs and funding sources
  • Support grant proposals with financial data and budgets as needed

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Supervise and develop accounting staff
  • Partner with cross-functional teams
  • Support financial decision-making through clear communication and data analysis
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant accounting standards and regulatory requirements: Federal HUD Regulations, EOHLC program requirements and state and federal low-income housing requirements

Systems and Process Improvement

  • Assist in documenting policies and procedures
  • Maintain and improve financial systems, policies, and procedures
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
  • Support financial software implementation or optimization as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 6 years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit or fund accounting
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, Uniform Guidance and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Experience managing audits and financial reporting
  • Proficiency with accounting software (preferably Quickbooks, Yardi Voyager, Yardi Breeze)
  • High proficiency with Microsoft 365 including Excel, Word and Outlook

Preferred

  • CPA
  • Prior supervisory or management experience
  • Consolidation and related party activities experience
  • Real estate development accounting experience
  • Property accounting experience
  • Experience with grant-funded organizations
  • Prior experience with Loan Operations processes (Commercial and Consumer)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires ability to regularly lift up to 25 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, copier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment.
